Introduction to Japanese.

Begin your journey into Japanese with a solid foundation. In this introductory level, you will learn the essential writing systems—hiragana, katakana, and an introduction to kanji—while developing core skills such as self-introduction, numbers, colors, and everyday vocabulary. Through structured lessons, you’ll also start understanding basic grammar, sentence formation, and pronunciation, giving you the confidence to read, write, and communicate from the very beginning.

Hiragana

Hiragana is the basic phonetic writing system of Japanese. Each symbol represents a syllable, and it is mainly used for native Japanese words, grammatical particles, and verb endings. There are 46 basic characters plus some variations. Example: こんにちは (konnichiwa – “hello”).

Katakana

Katakana is another phonetic script, but with sharper, angular strokes. It represents the same syllables as hiragana, yet it is primarily used for foreign words, onomatopoeia, scientific names, and emphasis. Like hiragana, it has 46 basic characters. Example: コンピュータ (konpyūta – “computer”)

Kanji

Kanji are logographic characters of Chinese origin adapted into Japanese. Each symbol conveys meaning rather than sound, and they are used for roots of words, names, and formal expressions. There are thousands of kanji, but about 2,000 are considered essential for daily use. Example: 山 (yama – “mountain”), 学 (gaku – “study”).
